For my passion blog, I am between three topics!
1) Humans of Penn State
How well do you really know the people you walk by everyday? Every person has a unique story, and this blog, modeled after the popular "Humans of New York" blog, would be dedicated to sharing them.
2) WE ARE Here: The College Nomad (still working on the name)
This blog would take readers to a new destination every week, planning 4 day long trips that are financially reasonable and fit for an exploring college student!
3) Shake-ing It Up: Life Lessons Learned From The Bard Himself (still working on this one too!)
Being an obsessive and avid Shakespeare reader, I would take lessons learned from different works and apply them to current, real life situations.

I really like your WE ARE Here: The College Nomad idea. There are so many great cities in close proximity to Penn State and a blog that explains how to get to these cities, what do to when you get there, and how to be cost effective would be really helpful. Also, there are so many possibilities within this topic that I think you could continue to provide new information for several weeks.
ReplyDeleteI love your second idea, WE ARE Here: The College Nomad and even though you said you are still working on the name, I think it is fitting and creative. As new students at Penn State, I think your blog would definitely be a great way for all of us to discover interesting things to do on and off campus to spice up our weekends. I am an avid explorer as well and I would be really interested to see what adventures you uncover.
ReplyDeleteI would advise against the first topic unless you can make absolutely sure that it is not derivative. After all, you are basing it on another blog and one of the example blogs was also based on said blog. Don't just copy what these blogs have done. For the second idea, my only advice would be to make sure that you are willing to commit to these trips. Also, what would you be planning on talking about? You have many options that you could chose, and you may focus on one, though you certainly don't have to. Finally, for the last blog, I wonder if you have considered the many situations in which Shakespeare gives poor advice; would you talk about these as well? Personally, I think either of the final two possibilities could possibly become great blogs.
ReplyDeleteYour second idea has potential, but I would worry that since I assume you wouldn't actually be able to go on all of these 4 day trips that you might not be able to plan them accurately enough for other students to go off of. Maybe if you scaled down the scope a little bit, and did pieces on singular places to go or things to do in central PA it might end up being more realistic? It would be awesome if you could go to the various places you talk about and give your personal experience of them, and I'm sure it would draw in a significant viewer-base. Good Luck with whatever you decide upon!
ReplyDeletePersonally, your second and third ideas really stood out to me the most. I think they are both very practical blogs that could be helpful to anyone that reads them. I love the second idea because I myself am an avid traveler. It would be cool to hear about your stories of certain places, and maybe I'd be able to connect with you on places I've already been. My only concern would be whether or not you're able to make enough of these trips to meet all ten blogs; I hope you can! Also, I really don't think you can go wrong with the third idea. It's solid with lots of information to pull from and ample usefulness for your audience. Have fun in picking!
ReplyDeleteRachel, interesting ideas. Your classmates provided thoughtful feedback about the merits and drawbacks of each, including whether the audience would perceive it as fresh (a HONY-style blog), whether it would be practical (the day trip blog), and whether the advice would be balanced (the Shakespeare blog).
ReplyDeleteGood luck deciding! (And just an observation: please be attentive to word count. I sense you could say more about these three ideas to reach the 300 word goal for RCL posts. Thanks!)
